Written By: Ken HulseyOne restaurant I fondly remember from my time in California is Clearman's North Woods Inn. I still have cravings for their Cheesy Bread and Red Cabbage Salad—both of which are nothing short of legendary. The restaurant combines delightful food with a fantastic ambiance, making it an ideal spot for everything from a first date to a special anniversary celebration.
At Clearman's, you can enjoy a bucket of peanuts in their shells while being encouraged to toss the shells on the floor, adding to the casual atmosphere. Whether it's a gourmet meal paired with a favorite beer or the cozy vibe reminiscent of a Yukon cabin, this place has a charm all its own. I've visited various Clearman's locations, and each meal has exceeded my expectations.
Founded by John Clearman in the 1940s, this family-owned establishment continues to thrive. Richard Selvik, the general manager, describes it as, "like being inside a big log cabin." Patrons enjoy the unique experience of peanuts on the table, with the option to toss the shells as they please. Long-time customer Patricia Jacobson recalled her family outings there during her teenage years, highlighting the ambiance created by Tiffany-style lamps and stained-glass windows.
The menu is diverse, featuring red cabbage salads, lumberjack steaks, pulled-pork sandwiches, roasted chicken, and a selection of seafood, including Alaskan king crab legs and rock lobster tails. Originally located in Monrovia, the restaurant was moved to its current spot on Rosemead Blvd. in San Gabriel in 1966 to accommodate the 210 Freeway construction. Clearman's North Woods Inn is just one of several family-owned venues, with additional locations in Covina and La Mirada, as well as a Steak ‘N Stein Inn in Pico Rivera and a Clearman’s Galley near the San Gabriel site.
